Oh, the Irony.
The creative minds of cyber-criminals never cease to amaze us. Emerging reports warn of a new type of Malware that exploits DDE (Dynamic Data Exchange) functionality within Microsoft. DDE allows you to link & share data between Microsoft apps – designed to make life easier. Granted, DDE functionality is vintage – it was replaced by Microsoft’s Object Linking Toolkit more than a decade ago; however Microsoft still supports DDE for compatibility reasons.
Didn’t get the Message.
Interested in the creative details? The newest malware travels via email attachment – not an uncommon way for malware to get around. Here’s where things get clever: DDE fields are embedded within word documents, and macros don’t need to be enabled to execute the malicious code. Normally two messages display when opening a file like this – the latter which clearly warns that you’re about to open an executable file. The catch? Cyber-criminals figured out a way to disable the second message. Tricky…and just in time for Halloween.
What’s the Lesson?
If not sarcastic, we’re being kind when we describe malware as ‘creative’ and ‘clever’. Malware can cripple your business. System downtime is expensive. Prevent ransomware from holding your business hostage (at a price you can afford) with Intercept X Security and a Next Generation Firewall.
It’s Time to Advance.
